Angry "no files to extract"

when i go to eqatlas, eqmaps, eq-toolbox, or eqgui and download a zipped file this is what happens, whenever i go to my desktop after downloading a .zip file and right click it to extract it i get the message "No files to extract!" and wehn i try left clicking the icon i get the message "The Compressed(zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.
it doesnt matter wich file either so obviously something in my settings were changed but ive never messed with them. i dont use norton for antivirus i use AVG but i only started having the problem about a week or so ago.
i hope ive been descriptive enough and please excuse my spelling mistakes. my aim sn is kitwilde catch me when u can...this is really bothering me. and if u couldnt tell already im fairly computer illiterate =/
ive posted on other forums and searched all over but i dont know what to do. ive spent all day looking through forums and now my eyes hurt and id like to know if someone can help me =/
-thanks

What are you using for your unzip application? Sounds like you may have an old version of it that can not read files saved in a newer version.

Use winzip 9.0

http://www.winzip.com/

Easy to use.

Or file association. ZIP files may be mapped to Wordpad or something. Um... if this makes sence, check it out. If not, ask a friend for help. Not sure how to explain it further.

Try saving the file to disk as a zip and opening it from there. I also get empty zip files if I try to open them directly from a web page.

Sometimes my old computer just randomly gave me that message. All I did was restart my computer and it was fine again. Could give that a try.
