Default Power of 2

I read somewhere that in order for graphics to work correctly ( size and aspect wise ) the dimensions of the graphic file itself must be powers of 2.

IE: a 100x100 graphic must be in a TGA file that is 128x128 ... if I crop the image to 100x100 then it will be mishapen in game.

I played with some and found that definately solved some problems I was having... but I'm wondering....

Does it HAVE to be a power of 2? Or does it just have to be an even number?

Power of 2 will mean a BIG jump in file size if you go over 256... basically you have to jump to 512x256 or 512x512.

I'm hoping I can do it with even numbers... if anyone knows for sure I'd love the feedback!

Thank you... I assumed that was going to be the answer ...

Fixing the SarsUI Hotbox as we speak.

I'm going to leave the buff bars and every other freakin graphic he added for another day. *grumble* At least those don't move around on me...

Just a note.. but if you go over 256x256 your mods won't work with voodoo card users anymore - so keep that in mind.

Yea I noticed that on my second machine... The older machines can't load imagemaps larger than 256

The skin came this way, so I'm kinda stuck with it... and it works ok on my main and I like the size.

I'm doing up my own UI from scratch and when I do that I'll keep everything under 256x256 for sure... it really annoys me that I have to switch UI's back and forth when I change machines

Remelio, one question...

Is it the size of the TGA file that causes the problem? Or the size of the graphic I put on the screen?

If I put a bunch of little stuff into a 512x512 TGA file, will that fail on older cards?

Just curious...
